Barclay+ is an LARC (long-acting reversible contraception) service provided by Barclay Medical Practice™ in partnership with the NHS.

We offer both the hormonal coil (IUS) and non-hormonal copper coil (IUD), as well as the NEXPLANON® etonogestrel implant, to patients eligible for NHS care across Edinburgh and the Lothians. You do not need to be registered with a Barclay Medical Practice GP to access the fitting service.

Please note that our coil removal service is currently only available to:

• patients registered with Barclay Medical Practice, or

• patients who have previously had their coil fitted through the Barclay+ service.

If your coil was not fitted by Barclay+ and you are not registered with Barclay Medical Practice, please contact your own GP practice or local sexual health service to arrange removal.

For patients attending for coil removal:

• Please avoid intercourse or use condoms for 7 days before your appointment if you do not wish to become pregnant.

• You may wish to take pain relief such as ibuprofen or paracetamol 30–60 minutes before your appointment.

• If you require alternative contraception after removal, please arrange this in advance as we are unable to provide this on the day of your appointment.
